Principal's Message

Thursday – Day of Mourning
As you are aware, the Prime Minister has announced a public holiday as a national day of mourning for the late Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday 22nd September. This means that our school will be closed this Thursday. It is important to note that the school term officially ends on Friday 23rd September and students are expected to attend school on this day. All previous arrangements for the 23rd remain in place and it will be ‘business as usual’.
Grounds Work
Over these holidays (and possibily into the new term) the school will be having some work done to the school grounds. This includes resurfacing the basketball courts, installing the cricket nets on the oval and having arborists trimming trees (including removing a couple that have come to the end of their lives). The P&C also plan to complete some work on the grounds sometime soon too.
At the same time, the City of South Perth have informed the school that Fourth Ave will be resurfaced. They hope to impact the Term 4 school time as little as possible, but please be aware that the resurfacing may not be finished by the start of the term.
Uniform – No Caps
We have begun to notice some students wearing caps instead of broad brimmed hats. As our uniform does not permit caps, and our Sunsmart policy requires only broad brimmed hats (no hat no play), please provide your child with a broad-brimmed hat. These are available at the uniform shop. This will be especially important to protect your child from sun burn etc in the summer months next term.
Interschool Athletics Win
Congratulations to the interschool athletics team. For the ninth year in a row Kensington PS has taken the shield. Thank you to Mrs Stanford for organising our team and its training and to the staff and parents who attended and supported our team. A big thank you to our interschool student leaders Stella and Zac on Thursday as well as Laura, Charlotte and Liam on Wednesday. A special mention must be made about our Wesley College student who has helped at both the faction athletics carnival and the interschool. Thank you, Clancy.
Keep Our School Safe
During the holiday period, school premises are more vulnerable than usual and can become targets for a small number of offenders.
If you live near the school or are passing by, please keep an eye on our grounds for us. Listen for unusual noises; look for suspicious vehicles and notice if groups of children or teenagers are congregating around the school. Your involvement can really make a difference in preventing damage to our school. I urge you to report any suspicious activities to:
SCHOOL WATCH – 1800 177 777
POLICE – 131 444
Term 4 starts 11th October
As usual, we have a school development day on the first Monday of Term 4 (10th October), which means that students do not start school for this term until Tuesday 11th October. We hope everyone has a lovely and safe term holiday and we look forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday 11th October.
Upcoming Events
Massed Choir
I am very excited to attend tonight’s Massed Choir festival. It is the musical highlight of each year for many schools. We had a sneak peak today at the assembly when S3 students performed a couple of the pieces. As we have such a large choir, it will be wonderful to see a mass of green and white amongst the other schools. Thank you to Mrs Dewing for organising our participation in this event and preparing our students for it. Thanks also to our staff and parents who support Mrs Dewing and the choir.
Crazy Hair Day for the Ukraine
The student council are fundraising to support the people of the Ukraine through the work of the Red Cross. We are asking for students to wear crazy hair on Tuesday 25th October and bring a gold coin for donation to the Ukraine Red Cross appeal.
Resources Challenge
The Year 5s will be attending the Resources Challenge at Kent Street SHS on Friday 14th October (the first week of Term 4). If you are a parent of a Year 5 student, you should have received an email via Consent 2 Go seeking permission for your child to attend.
Fathering Project
Top Tips from the Fathering Project
- Practise active listening.
Really listen to your child, hear their thoughts and opinions and ask open-ended questions in return. - Talk about values. What are your core values? Talk about these with your child and role model them too.
- Be involved in your child's education. Read with them, help with their homework and stimulate their curiosity from a young age.
Dad joke of the week
I got my daughter a fridge for her birthday. I can't wait to see her face light up when she opens it...
Foyer Display

Kindy 1
Kindy 1 have been exploring the local environment. We looked at maps of our playground and Kensington Primary School. We talked about how we travel to school and what things we see on our journey to school. We even had a guess at the name of the street where we live.

Kindy 2
Kindy 2 read the story "The Tiger Who Came to Tea". We then did bubble wrap painting for his stripes, and drew our own tigers. We did a great job!

Kindy 3
This term in our Talk for Writing lessons in Kindy 3, we have been learning the language of storytelling using the 'Dear Zoo' story by Rod Campbell. We have learnt actions to support our understanding and retelling of the story and also created story maps in small groups. We have chosen our favourite animal from the story, which we have designed and created using a range of materials and tools.

Interschool Carnival
On Wednesday the Jumps, Throws and 400m team got us off to a great start last week.
On Thursday the individual sprints went brilliantly, with all competitors placing in their event. In the team games we had mixed results - the flag races and relays were done superbly. A couple of times we made mistakes but the teams never gave up and worked hard to get back into a placing position. To cap it all off we won the Grand relay. Well done team!
Thanks to our team managers, helpers and staff who assisted at the carnival. Extra special thanks to Clancy from Wesley College - he has been assisting with PE classes on a weekly basis and was the starter at the carnival. He did a fantastic job.
Congratulations to our individual medallion winners in Finn Year 3 runner-up champion boy, Parker Year 4 champion girl, Isabel Year 4 runner-up champion girl, James Year 5 champion boy and Sam Year 6 runner-up champion boy.
Thanks to all the parents who came and supported our team.
The final placings: -
1st Kensington 733
2nd Victoria Park 468
3rd Lathlain 400
4th East Victoria Park 348
5th Millen 300
6th Bentley 202
Sporting Schools
All students from Pre-primary to Year 6 have participated in basketball sessions in their PE lessons funded by Sporting Schools. This enables us to have an extra coach to assist with lessons and buy more basketball equipment. We have received funding for next term. The plan is for the Year 3 students to complete a Bike education program and also to have an extra coach to assist with tennis sessions in our PE lessons.
Running Club
Running Club is over for another term. Thanks to all the parents who have assisted over the term. We will recommence Week 4 and run through until Week 8. Keep running over the holidays.
Winter Sport
Congratulations to many of our students who have recently competed in grand finals in basketball, netball, AFL, hockey and soccer. It is great to see so many of our students involved in weekend community sport.
Summer Sports
Registrations are open for many of our community summer sports. Sign up on their websites for a summer of fun. Check out information about a variety of sports on the Sport noticeboard and in the newsletter.

DUCK’s Dads and Kids visit to Boola Bardip (WA Museum) Sunday 18 September 2022
A small group of DUCKs dads and kids visited the Boola Bardip (Many Stories) WA Museum on Sunday 18 September 2022 and enjoyed the wide variety of interactive natural history displays on offer. There was also the chance for the kids to experience some retro computer games in the form of Mario Cart and Virtual Reality (VR) experiences as part of the XR:WA exhibition being held over the weekend. Please note that Boola Bardip - WA Museum Entry is free until 10 October 2022. So dads and families, if you haven't been there recently, it is well worth making a visit in the near future and let the kids explore. The Patagonia dinosaur exhibit is also well worth a visit and requires paid tickets for entry. Overall it was a great day out. We continue to receive plenty of positive feedback from dads and kids about our DUCKs events. Any suggestions or feedback can be sent to DUCKS.KPS@gmail.com We hope to see you at the DUCKs Campout in November.
